What are the Predictive Methods in Astrology?

When an astrologer looks at your chart, he or she may use one of four main methods to divine the fate of a specific venture. The four main methods used have been in existence for thousands of years, and are intended to help the astrologer analyse the future of personal relationships, places, and events.

In order for predictive astrology to work, you do need a date of some kind that the astrologer can create a chart for – it is usually a birth date for the event or country. The event could be the opening of a diner, the signing of contract to the creation of a political entity or group. This is then treated like a natal chart and the astrologer casts the chart to see what will happen. The process is a little more complex for a relationship, but similar techniques are used to compare the chart – instead both person’s birthdates are sometime used.

There are four main ways astrologers utilize predictive astrology. These are solar and lunar returns, progressions, horary astrology, and transits.

  1. Solar and lunar return charts are based on the principle that a new chart is created for when the Sun and the Moon return to their natal positions. With the solar return occurs, a chart is cast with the precise day and time for any given year and for the place where the native is at the moment of his birthday. The solar return is then interpreted for a new natal chart that is good for one year – until the person’s next birthday. Using this method, it is possible to find major influences and themes throughout the year and from one birthday to the next. The same process is used for a lunar chart.
  2. Progressions are charts that are moved forward on the basis of one day for one year of age. This is a very ancient technique that is not used as much anymore because the outer planets (Jupiter through to Pluto) did not exist at the time. The progressions are based on the Sun’s motion of one degree on the Zodiac. This equates to one year of life. This way, you and progress the planets to any given age and the aspects they may form are interpreted accordingly. Throughout the history of astrology, the above methods have proved to be surprising accurate. However, astrology being the impure science that it is, it has been quite rarely that it has ever been properly statically and scientifically analyzed.
  3. Another method is Horary astrology, in which a chart is cast for the exact time and place where the question is posed. The interpretation is then carried out according to a certain set of rules to arrive at a chart that tells how the event or project will turn out according to the time the venture is initiated. Using this technique, is it is possible to predict major events or at least get a sense of what will happen.
  4. Transits are also an effective way of making a forecast. These predictions are usually made more precise with the transits of fast moving planets (Mercury through Mars) in order to identify the dates when events are triggered. In some instances, the moon can also play a role. The outer planets remain longer in one place and their influences can last a long time because they move very slowly. Most contemporary charts combine the solar return method with the transits to create quite an accurate prediction of how things might turn out in the future.
